Imaginary North, the Toronto-based ambient label created by Daniel Field (Kilometre Club), has been releasing music for the past year across compilations and individual artist releases. Striving for a balance between ethereal and ambitious, intimate and expansive, the label has shared music by new and experienced musicians from across the world.
Now, they’ve outdone themselves. Across 92 tracks and 84 artists, Today Until Tomorrow features 24 hours of ambient, drone, experimental, electronic, neo-classical, post-rock, and everything in between. Featuring a wide array of ambient artists including City of Dawn, Perry Frank, Yoyu, Blanket Swimming, zakè, Antarctic Wastelands, Simon McCorry, and so many more!
The collection is sequenced to follow the span of a day beginning at noon, with mild afternoon ambient turning into more exploratory and percussive evening music, late night textures, and then sleepy overnight drones. Early sunrise tracks lead to morning experimental movements, ending with late morning coffee tones.
Underlying this entire concept is the notion of what ‘tomorrow’ means, with a focus on the environment. All purchases of the compilation on Bandcamp will go to Music Declares Emergency, an artist-centred nonprofit focusing on music’s response to climate change. Many of the artists created their tracks with this in mind; for example, the penultimate track, Richard Griffiths’ ‘Global Warming’ features a sample of Carl Sagan’s speech before congress.
